⚖️ Are You a Small or Large Energy Customer?
Your eligibility to use Cut My Rates depends on how much energy your business consumes. Here’s a breakdown to help you determine where you fit.
⚡ Electricity – Small Business Customer Thresholds

💡 Examples of typical SME businesses we can support:
- Small cafés, retail stores, or hair salons
- Dental clinics, physio practices, or boutique agencies
- Local gyms or childcare centres
- Offices with <20 staff
- Workshops or mechanics using standard commercial energy tariffs
🔥 Gas – Small Business Threshold
If your business uses less than 1 terajoule (TJ) of gas annually, you're considered a small gas customer.
1 TJ = 1,000,000 megajoules (MJ).
💡 Common small gas users:
- Bakeries using gas ovens
- Restaurants with small commercial kitchens
- Laundromats with fewer than 10 machines
- Smaller hospitality venues
🏭 What If You're a Large Energy Customer?
If your business operates on a large scale, like manufacturing, cold storage, data centres, or multi-location retail chains, your energy use may exceed the small customer thresholds.
This places you in the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) category, where energy contracts are:
- Individually negotiated
- Priced based on market conditions and load profile
- Not eligible for standard SME comparison tools
Cut My Rates doesn’t currently manage C&I brokerage, but we partner with trusted brokers who specialise in negotiating these complex contracts. We’d be happy to refer you if needed.

To find out where you sit:
- Check your energy bill for yearly usage in kWh (electricity) or MJ/TJ (gas).
- Or upload your bill to us, and we’ll do the assessment for you.
